SIDEWALK MOSIAC PROJECT

Earlier this year, I entered a contest to have one of my artworks reproduced as a mosaic which would then be embedded into the sidewalk of the Creek Art District in Stuart, Florida.

I sent in this picture of a small painting I had done years before, and was soon notified that I was a finalist in the contest

Soon after, I was notified my design had won the contest!  Oh my!  What had I done!  I had never tried a mosaic.  Contest rules dictated that I work with a specific mosaic studio in town, where I met Corina who assured me this would work.  After several visits, my 20x20" mosaic was completed.

Finally the installation day arrived.  Below is the picture of Corina and Billy (from the City of Stuart) grouting the mosaic into the sidewalk.

When the grout was cleaned off, I was horrified!!

It was not reading well at all!  I could barely recognize what I was looking at, so how would anyone else know?

Fortunately, a day later, during the grand unveiling,  I could recognize the sweet dolphin's face breaking through the water.

Approximately 40 people came to the unveiling, standing in the hot Florida sun.  I was humbled by the event.  A week later, the mosaic looks even better, as the grout has completely dried.

I am thrilled that I was able to participate in this wonderful project.  Mine was the third mosaic installed this year and there are plans for many more in the coming months.  What an exciting project to bring attention to the art district for many years to come.

Reproducing my Oil Painting in Mosaic, Daily Painting, Goody Bye Oils, Hello Mosaic!

Stuart’s Creek District Sidewalk Mosaic Program is in full swing as mosaicist #3, Carol Schiff, works to complete her dolphin design and voting is open for the fourth mosaic artist! Project coordinators, Corina Pelloni and Diane Concepcion are eager to share their wealth of knowledge with anyone who wants to explore the world of mosaic creations.  The Rickie Report gives you some sneak peeks of Carol’s work as all we information about voting for Mosaic Artist #4 and classes.

Carol is a very skilled and experienced oil painter. Mosaic art is a new medium for her. A pleasure to have in the studio, she has been working diligently on her winning design, and has really taken to mosaic art like a… dolphin to water.

Here is Carol’s original painting shown next to her work-in-progress:

Carol is a Florida oil painter who loves the coastal beaches, flora and fauna of this tropical paradise. Her second love is the Asheville/Blue Ridge Mountains area. Her art features both of these sites.

Her painting style is characterized by exciting brushwork, contrast, hues, and texture from palette knives. She skillfully applies these techniques to images of landscapes, still lifes and animals.

With a client list that includes Warner Brothers, Netflix, CBS, Disney Channel and Duke University, you may have seen one of her paintings on the screen. One painting is in the 2019 movie ‘The Joker’. A few more make appearances in popular TV shows Magnum PI and Hawaii 5-0.

To see more of her work, visit her shop on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CarolSchiffStudio

Carol’s mosaic will be completed in a few more sessions. Then, it will be installed near Herban Botanicals on Colorado Ave, and we’ll gather to celebrate a new piece of public art in Downtown Stuart’s Creek District of Arts and Entertainment.

There’s more:

Don’t miss your opportunity to vote on the design for the 4th mosaic!

The location for this artwork will be the sidewalk at the intersection of 5th Street and A1A near Kiwanis Park. Both finalists designs are beautiful original artworks submitted by brilliant local artists, Marian Vitale and Deborah Bottorf.

Wondering  if  you’d  like  to  try  mosaic  art?

All are welcome to enter a design for consideration. When a contest is open, it will be accessible by the link above, and that’s also where information about the program can be found.

Another option is to take an intro to mosaics class. Classes are offered at Flagler Center on the first Saturday and third Wednesday of each month. You must register in advance for a workshop. Abstract Seascape Painting, 8x16" Palette Knife Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting SOLD

We are happy to be back in Florida, and I wanted to mark the occassion with a new abstract.

SOLD
I really enjoyed creating this art.  Sometimes it is nice to just get in the zone, no particular plan, and let the subconscious take over.

I love playing with paint and these represent some of my favorite colors.  I didn't plan to do a seascape, but it feels like one, especially of the tropical waters in the Caribbean Islands.

The last few months have been hectic for me.  This is just what I needed to calm me down.

Have a great day and thanks for reading my blog.

Seascape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Pink Clouds" , 11x14x1.5" Oil

I live close to the sea, and it turns up quite often in my art. Nothing gets me up faster than a fabulous sunrise...grab a cup of coffee and head for the beach, camera in hand.

purchase here
250. + shipping
Yes, I said grab my camera, not my paints.  I am a studio painter.  I quickly get over-whelmed with plein aire and have no desire to try it again.  Give me my air conditioning, plumbing and subject matter that doesn't change.

For years, I felt I was not a "real artist" and hid my shameful secrete.  Actually, I have so much respect for artists that strap a 36x48" canvas on their back and then hike 7,000 feet to the top of a mountain to paint.  Such dedication, and yes, the light cannot be duplicated.  But, neither can those special effects you can capture with a camera.

My choices are paint in a studio, or don't paint.....and I am happy with the choice I made.  To each his own!

Thanks for reading my rant today :)

Turquoise Wave, Original Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 14x18" Oil on Canvas SOLD

It's almost time for us to return to the mountains, so I am trying to get in as many walks on the beach, while we are still here in Florida.  I always take my phone and always take many photos on these walks.

SOLD

I'm REALLY going to miss those walks!!

Many artists paint seascapes from life, but, it always blows my brain!  All those waves coming in, color changes......etc.  How do they do it?  It is more than I can comprehend!

Thanks for reading my blog today.

Tribute to Courtney

This is off subject, but I want to take a moment to celebrate my granddaughter and her many years of hard work.

Courtney is graduating from medical school in a few weeks and has been awarded a residency in OB/GYN at Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN.

Mayo in Rochester is the number one rated hospital in the world, and they only had five OB/GYN residency openings.

I am so proud of my granddaughter, the doctor, and know she will treat her patients with compassion and dedication.  CONGRATULATIONS to her and her wonderful Mom!

Dolphin Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting

Years ago, I painted a dolphin after visiting the Florida Keys.  When our local art club announced a contest, I decided to enter.

The idea was to submit a design that could be re-created as a mosaic, which would then be embedded in the sidewalk of the local art district.

Since I live on the coast of Florida, I thought this dolphin painting would be perfect.  Apparently I was correct because I won the contest.

I have never attempted mosaic but have always had a desire to try.  Now I will be working with an accomplished mosaic artist to complete my mosaic.  The idea that it will be embedded in the sidewalk for hopefully many years is very appealing to me.  Wish me luck as I attempt this new procedure.

Art and Fashion

Several  months ago, I was contacted by an Israeli fashion designer, Assaf Pelleg.  He was designing his 2017 Spring/Summer Line, and wanted to use one of my paintings in his work.  I agreed to work with him, and we found two of my artworks that were of interest to him.

For several months, I heard nothing!  Then, suddenly, an email with the completed designs.

I am thrilled with the results!

This is the fun part of what I do.  I sometimes struggle for days, over a specific artwork.  Just this week, I have worked on a piece for 3 days, and scrapped it this morning!  Then there are the boring hours, after hours, of internet work.  Taking photos, editing them, posting them.  Sometimes it seems the reward, is not enough to justify the effort.

But then, one day, a painting effortlessly falls off my brush, or a student sends me his power point presentation about how he was influenced by my art, or someone on the other side of the world, likes my work enough to place it in his collection.

That is the payoff!

Thanks for reading my blog today!

Abstract Seascape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 11x14" Original Oil Painting

It is so hard to believe, that we have been living in the mountains of North Carolina for a year and a half.  I marvel at the beautiful mountain scenes outside my door.  Asheville has sooo much to offer!

But there is something it cannot offer...the beach, the sea, the salt air.

Maybe that is why I was moved to do this abstract.

Purchase here

I had fun playing with the direction of my knife strokes.  Still a minimalist painting, but with a little added interest.   Hmmmm, I see a mountain abstract in my future!

The perfect wall decor for a beach house, or for someone dreaming of a beach house.

We will be heading back to the beach soon, and I will have sand on my toes, once again.

Have a blessed day!

BEACHSIDE - 8X10 - SOLD

I got interested in doing seascapes. I was at the beach with my camera and was inspired by all the beautiful blues and greens in the water. I did 3 8x10's and 4 5x7's, so far. This is the first one I did and probably my favorite.

Daily Painting, Seascape Painting, Ocean Painting, Beach Painting, "Celebrating Blue" 16x20x1.5" Oil S

I wanted to do a seascape, or actually a beach painting, somewhere between an abstract and impressionism.  If this looks a little familiar, it is because I posted the study for this work a month or two ago.

SOLD

I wanted to record just my memories and impressions of trips to the beach.  I painted with a knife and tried to work quickly.

I tried not to think too much about the colors I was using or where I was putting them, but tried to keep it really instinctive.

I wanted plenty of texture in this piece.

It was a fun exercise, although I wish I had done a larger piece.  Maybe someday I will.

Thanks for viewing my blog today.

Florida Seascape Painting, small oil painting, daily painting

I created this small seascape from my memories of the beautiful beaches that surround us here in the state of Florida.

SOLD
I painted with a brush and pallet knife to show texture in the waves rushing to shore and the sea oats rising above the protective dunes.

The more I travel, the more I am in awe of our beautiful world, including the beauty of my home states.  It is so easy to forget the beauty that surrounds you.  Take a moment today to find your beauty.

Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Small Seascape |Tropical Waters by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Oil SOLD

If you follow this blog, you know how much I like to paint seascapes.  Not just any seascapes, but scenes from my own little piece of the Atlantic.

SOLD

The waves were coming in quickly on this day.  I think a "tropical depression" was off shore.  Tropical depression is a weatherman's term, several steps below a hurricane, but usually meaning the winds will kick up to some degree and rain is on the horizon.  Of course, in Florida, this time of the year.....rain is always on the horizon.

This photo is a little wonky.....sorry!  When I take photos of my paintings, I usually have 5-10 paintings to photograph, trying to get 5-6 shots of each.  I get a little production line going...and I guess I didn't pay much attention to how this one was lined up :)

This summer, we have been tied to home and we are missing our annual trips to the mountains. We will be there soon and will really appreciate getting a chance to leave this hot and humid weather behind for a stay in the cool mountain country.  How do you spend your summer?

Abstract Seascape, Abstract Sunset, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 6x8" SOLD

I am always fascinated by sunsets, especiall sunsets over water.  This little study is my impressions of a sunset at Fernandina Beach harbor.

SOLD

Of course, it bares no comparison to the actual photo(or the actual event) I took, but it did provide me with several hours of fun in the studio.

Such a simple piece should not have turned into the project I experienced, but as often happens, it did.  I wanted just the right glow of colors.

It seems with me, a painting either falls off my brush or it is a major struggle.  The falling off my brush part does not happen nearly as often as the major struggle.  After 20+ years of painting, I imagined I would be further down the road.  As my kids like to say, "it is what it is".

I try to appease myself by thinking if it were easy, it would be boring.  Maybe so, but I could handle just a tad more boring,

Hope you have a great day.  Thanks for stopping by.
